What to check before you buy
For cocktails, there are two main shaker styles. A three-piece cobbler shaker has a built-in strainer and is simple for beginners, while a two-piece Boston shaker is quicker to use and clean but needs a separate strainer. A jigger with clear millilitre markings helps you pour consistent, measured drinks. For wine, a waiter's friend corkscrew is compact and dependable, and lever or electric openers make light work of many bottles at a party. Most Australian wines are sealed with screw caps, so a corkscrew matters most for cork-sealed and older bottles. A decanter with a wide base gives young red wine room to breathe. Large silicone ice moulds make slow-melting cubes and spheres that dilute drinks less. Measure the space for a wine rack, including the depth for bottle necks.
