What to check before you buy
For glassware, think about how you wash up. Thicker, tempered or heavy-based tumblers handle the dishwasher and everyday knocks well, while fine-stemmed wine glasses are often better washed by hand. Check the capacity in millilitres, since a standard wine glass pour is far smaller than the size of most glasses, and a jug of 1.5–2 litres serves a table of four to six. For insulated bottles and travel mugs, double-wall stainless steel keeps drinks hot or cold for hours; compare the lid style, whether it fits your car cup holder or bag pocket, and whether the lid seals can be removed for cleaning. Many insulated bodies are hand wash only, because dishwasher heat can damage the vacuum seal or finish. For kids, look for lighter, unbreakable materials and lids that small hands can open.
