Every kitchen has a few pieces that get used every single day and a cupboard full of things that do not. We try to stock more of the first kind. Here is what we look at before a product joins one of our 10 departments.
1. Materials and build
We start with what something is made of and how it is put together: the gauge of a saucepan base, how a handle is fixed, the glaze on a plate, the steel in a knife. Materials should suit the job, and the construction should hold up to daily use, washing and the odd knock.
2. Easy care
A beautiful pan that is a chore to clean ends up at the back of the cupboard. We favour pieces with clear care instructions, sensible dishwasher guidance and parts that come apart for washing, and we explain the care each material needs in our Care guide.
3. Made for Australian kitchens
We consider how people here really cook and entertain: induction cooktops in new homes and apartments, benchtop space, metric sizes and Australian cup and spoon measures, the summer barbecue and the long table lunch. Sizes are listed in centimetres and litres so you can measure before you buy.
4. Real everyday needs
We look for products that solve a genuine problem, from a frypan that suits a family breakfast to a container that keeps a lunch from leaking, rather than novelties that are used once.
5. Honest information
Every product page should tell you the materials, dimensions, capacity and care in plain language. If we cannot describe something clearly and accurately, we would rather not list it.
What we leave out
We do not use countdown timers, artificial scarcity messages or inflated "was" prices, and we do not make health or performance claims we cannot back up. If something you buy does not suit you, our free 30-day returns mean you can send it back at no cost.
