What to check before you buy
Dinner sets are usually described by pieces and place settings: a 16-piece set is commonly four settings of a dinner plate, side plate, bowl and mug, so count the people you regularly feed and add a few spares for breakages. Material changes the feel. Porcelain is fine and durable, stoneware is thicker with a relaxed, handmade look, and bone china is light yet strong. Check whether pieces are dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe, and avoid putting anything with a metallic rim in the microwave. For cutlery, 18/10 stainless steel contains nickel for extra shine and corrosion resistance, while 18/0 is more affordable and magnetic. Finally, measure your cupboard shelves; wide rimmed plates and tall mugs do not always fit standard kitchen cabinetry.
